what to eat in mumbaiBeing a cosmopolitan city, Mumbai has some of the best dishes and taste to offer. The food here has been influenced by flavors from all parts of India. Since, a lot of people do not consume non-veg, we would restrict our list to only veg items.
Take a look at the below list and see if they seem mouth watering to you. Most of these dishes can be categorized as fast food.

What to Eat in Mumbai

1. Vada Pav

Vada Pav, alternatively spelt Vada Pao, Wada Pav, or Wada Pao, is a vegetarian fast food dish native to the Indian state of Maharashtra. The dish consists of a deep fried potato dumpling placed inside a bread bun (pav) sliced almost in half through the middle. It is generally accompanied with one or more chutneys and a green chilli pepper. It originated as cheap street food in Mumbai, but is now served in food stalls and restaurants across India. It is also called Bombay Burger in keeping with its origins and its resemblance in physical form to a burger.

#Poha is a savoury dish made by tempering soaked flattened rice with cumin and mustard seeds, green chillies, turmeric and curry leaves. Peas, peanuts, potatoes, cilantro and lime juice are added to add crunch and more flavour to this dish. There are several variations of this dish all over India. Indian Ayurveda deems Poha as one of the healthiest breakfasts. . . This is my spin on the classic poha recipe. I have replaced whole oats with flat rice. A plate of piping hot poha or pohe is one of the best Maharashtrian breakfasts ever. Made with pressed rice, boiled potatoes and plenty of onions sautéed with a simple tempering of mustard seeds, turmeric, green chillies and jeera, finished off with a sprinkling of fresh coriander. This kanda poha recipe is testimony to the fact that the simplest things in life are often the best.

3. Misal Pav

A much-loved Maharashtrian curry that is a fiery melange of potatoes, freshly made spice paste and sprouted beans. Goes best with pav, it is usually served at the breakfast table but also makes for a light meal in itself.

4. Pav Bhaji

Pav Bhaji is one of the most popular Indian snacks, specially in Maharashtra. It is a delicious combination of different vegetables cooked and mashed together. This is one dish, loved by people of all ages and cooked with different variations in different households. Pav Bhaji is the smartest way to have all the healthy vegetables together without compromising on the taste.

5. Bhutta

Having hot bhutta in the windy rain has become part of Mumbai’s food tradition. Traditionally, corn was available in India only during the monsoon. Even now, although sweet corn grows around the year, it is cheapest in this season, when it is abundant. Many fruit-vendors double as corn-sellers in the monsoon to make extra money. What would you like, then? Spicy or sweet?

6. Bun Maska

Bun maska is a Maharashtrian staple. Buns are nothing but very soft bread and Maska is nothing butter simple butter. The iconic Bun Maska, has its own loyal followers and is usually served in many of Mumbai’s Irani hotels.

9. Bhel Puri

Bhelpuri is a savoury snack, originating from the Indian subcontinent, and is also a type of chaat. It is made of puffed rice, vegetables and a tangy tamarind sauce. Bhel is often identified with the beaches of Mumbai, such as Chowpatty or Juhu.

Sev puri is one of the popular Indian chaat. The combination of papdi (crispy flat puri), sev (deep fried gram flour noodles), boiled potatoes (batata), moong (green beans), onion and assortment of chutneys like green chutney and tangy date tamarind chutney make it simply irresistible

11. Ragda Patis

Ragda pattice is part of the street food culture in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. It is similar to chhole tikki more popular in North India. This dish is a popular street food offering, and also served at restaurants that offer Indian fast food. “Pattice” may be a localization of the English word “patties,” and refers to the potato cakes at the heart of the dish.

12. Paani Puri

It consists of a round, hollow puri, fried crisp and filled with a mixture of flavored water (commonly known as imli pani), tamarind chutney, chili, chaat masala, potato, onion or chickpeas. Modern chefs, eager to take their culinary expertise to the next level, have come up with interesting variations to the Gol Gappa like the Cucumber Pani Puri, in which cucumber juice is used to fill up the puris.

13. Sabudana Vada

Sabudana vada, also called ‘sago vada’, is a traditional deep fried snack from Maharashtra, India. It is often served with spicy green chutney and along with hot chai and is best eaten fresh. In other parts of the country, Sabudana vada are the best option to have when fasting.

14. Dhokla

is a vegetarian food item that originates from the Indian state of Gujarat. It is made with a fermented batter derived from rice and split chickpeas. Dhokla can be eaten for breakfast, as a main course, as a side dish, or as a snack.

15. Frankie

it is a well loved street food that originates from the vendors of 1930’s old Bombay and was served to ordinary citizens and Bollywood stars alike.
