To Meat or Not to Meat…..“that is the question. The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation has recently banned meat in the Mira-Bhayander area during the period of Paryushan. This has come after a voting in the area assembly in which the BJP’s have won the proposal for ban by couple of votes.

Lets dive into a bit more deeper.
To a give a brief of ‘Paryushan’. Its a fasting period for Jains. And since from the 8.5 lakh population of the Mira-Bhayander city as per the 2011 national consensus, 1.25 lakh are Jains, which is a rough 14 percent of the population. Though its a great effort in respecting the jain’s fasting period, on the other hand, the meat sellers have been hit hard in their finances. It is yet not clear whether the government will compensate them for their losses. Definitely, care should be taken to minimize the effect of the ban on the non-jain community.
Amidst all these news, there is some relief, where the fish sales can go on.

Fish, ok to sell

There have been arguments between the political parties, where the ban opposing parties are saying that the ban cannot be imposed, as such it will affect other people also. They went on to say that people should have the right to choose what to eat and what not to eat. On the other side, the ban favoring party’s have justified the ban mentioning the provisions in the law where the local assembly can pass a resolution to such effect provided  it gets the minimum number of votes required for the same.

The ban have also been extended to Mumbai. However, the extent to which the ban will be imposed in Mumbai will be lesser compared to Mira-Bhayander.
